An Explanation of the Britishs Stuggles to Finance the...
The article written by Javier Cuenca Esteban, ââ¬Å"The British balance of payments, 1772-1820: India transfers and war financeâ⬠focuses on the British ability to finance the wars with Napoleonic France. Esteban challenges the academic state of debate regarding the importance of exports on British Industrialization by pointing out that he believes without the exports from India, Britain would have struggled to finance her wars with France and may have never become the incubator of Industrialization. His argument comes back to the numbers he presents projecting the gap between foreign indebtedness actual and counterfactual would increase from 1802 to 1815 by over ninety million British pound sterling. The significant increase in debt wasâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Esteban sets the value of his calculations by creating an average of pre-existing calculations for the earliest time frame of 1772-1775 of net British debts. He relies mainly on figures derived from Walter Nash and Albert H. Imlah, both of which are Economic British Historians. The author then begins to advance each line according to their own specific histories. For instance he takes into account the raise of tariffs on certain products such as tobacco that would affect the quantity of illegal imports, thus affecting the real credit value. The author also goes into great detail to compensate for the stated inaccuracies of some numbers, by showing how numbers counter-balance one another to give an accurate final account of net credits. In the appendix he goes into great depth to explain each category as well as giving a price evidence for numerous specific commodities traded between Britain and India during this time period. Esteban concludes with acknowledging the weaker values for some of the credits. He makes it clear the entire process of the time period moving from mercantilism to industrialization within the time frame and the wars with France created extremely complex range of scenarios to explain the balance of payments. He points out research in the areas of wealthy immigrantsââ¬â¢ transfers and net incomes, as well as capital flow from the British West Indies remain particularly difficult to quantify. This gap in

Washingtons Accomplishment free essay sample
George Washington set many precedents for future presidents of America, including his policies on foreign affairs, his actions while dealing with mommies issues, and his monumental decision to step down from the presidency after two terms in his Farewell Address. One of George Washingtons primary concerns was for the united States to remain neutral among European conflicts. Washington made sure to make this perfectly clear; On the Politics Of Europe shall express no Opinion, nor make any inquiry who is Right or who is Wrong. Sis well to all nations and to all men. (Document 1) Also, the Neutrality Act was passed in 1794 and this helped prevent wars with European nations, because it prevented a long-term alliance with a country. That way, the America would not be dragged into a war because of another country. As you can see, Washington did not wish to interfere in European matters. This is an historic precedent set by Washington because it made sure that America would always strive to stay out of European conflicts. We will write a custom essay sample on Washingtons Accomplishment or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Also, Washington knew that it was crucial to try to avoid issues with European nations, who at the time were very powerful, especially the countries of Britain, France and Spain. At the point in time of Washingtons presidency, there was a great deal of tension between America and these countries. The united States needed to ease the tension. The solution Washington and his ambassadors came up with was Jays Treaty and Pinkeye s treaty. Jays Treaty and Pinkness Treaty helped to solidify Americas position with England and Spain respectively. Now not only did Washington deal with foreign troubles extremely well, he also was forced to handle difficult domestic issues as well. One major domestic issue George Washington dealt with was the enormous national debt. With the help of Alexander Hamilton, the Secretary of State, the National Bank was created and this helped the nation climb out of debt. Washington also reduced the national debt by establishing excise taxes on usury goods, such as whiskey. However, the excise tax on whiskey eventually lead to the Whiskey Rebellion. The Whiskey Rebellion was a large uprising of rural farmers in Western Pennsylvania who were outraged over the new tax on whiskey. In another brilliant decision by Washington, Washington chose to put an end to the rebellion promptly and swiftly with a show of force. Washington ordered 1 3,500 troops to be sent to Western Pennsylvania to quell the rebellion (Whiskey Rebellion Worksheet). By doing this, Washington showed the country that he had full control and complete authority in his entry and that the federal government was not weak. But even some of these decisions may not have been the most significant precedent he set. Washington set probably his most important precedent of all his Farewell Address. In his Farewell Address, Washington announced that he shall step down from the presidency after the end of his second term and he declared that he shall not choose to run for president a third term. Washington made sure that there was no doubt about his decision in his farewell address; Friends and Citizens: The period for a new election of a citizen to administer run] the executive government of the United States [has come] And] Decline being considered among Those out of whom a choice is to be made (Document 3). Clearly, Washington did not want the Presidency to become like a kingship, even though if he had wished, he could have remained president for the rest of his life. When George Washington began his presidency, America was a fledgling country with a plethora of problems facing it. By the time that George Washington left the executive office, our nation was much closer to becoming a fully stabilized sovereignty. Washington had transformed the country from struggling nation in debt to a prosperous nation. All of his decisions during his presidency were brilliant. Whether it was stepping down from office after two terms, or domestic issues, or foreign affairs, George Washington is undoubtedly the most significant of the early presidents. It was these precedents and more that he established that has made the United States into the great nation that it is today. Every president since Washington has tried to emulate what he has done and follow in his footsteps. That is why many historians consider George Washington to be the greatest president in American History.

Edgar Allan Poes life and Work
Edgar Allan Poes life and Work Free Online Research Papers Edgar Allan Poes life experiences had a major impact on the topics and themes of his writing. Edgar Allan Poe lived a very heartbroken, dejected, short life compared by todays standards. One theme that Edgar wrote about often in his stories and poems was death. He wrote about that topic because most everyone he loved or cared for died. Another prevalent topic in his writing was the theme of revenge. A recurring topic in his literature is the alcoholism. He wrote about that because in real life he was an alcoholic and drunk for a lot of his life. Probably the event In Edgar Allan Poes life that affected and impacted him the most was the death of his wife Virginia. That was the basis of many of his stories. Edgar Allan Poe constantly mentions death in his writing. In The Raven, Poes wife, Virginia, has died. Poe just cannot imagine life without his wife. He is so overcome with grief that some believe he hallucinates about the raven in this story. In the story, the raven taunts him, repeating Never more to all of his pleas. This topic, death, also connects to a time early in Poes life when his parents died. Poe experienced a lot of death, even early in life. Because Edgar Allan Poe lost his mom and step-mom at a young age, he became very depressed. This was aided when the love of his life, Virginia also died. In the story, ââ¬Å"The Cask of Amontillado,â⬠Poes emotions show the most. In The Cask of Amontillado, a man, named Fortunato, insulted a very powerful man named Montresor. Montresor wants revenge and says, ââ¬Å"nemo me impune lacessit.â⬠In other words, No one insults me without punishment.â⬠As they walk along a hallway to the dungeon, Montresor hints at his plot. However, Fortunato is too drunk to notice. Montresor then chains Fortunato to a wall. After doing so, Montresor bricks it up, burying him alive. This story shows the prominent topic of revenge in Edgar Allan Poes stories and poems. Because Edgar Allan Poe was an alcoholic, it was a common theme in his poems and stories. An example of the influence of alcohol is The Black Cat. Here, Poe writes about committing gruesome acts while he is intoxicated. He also admits in this masterpiece that he has an alcohol abuse problem by restating it multiple times. An example of this is when Poe says, ââ¬Å"But my disease grew upon me for what disease is like Alcohol!â⬠Edgar Allan Poe related The Black Cat to his own life experiences because he had an addiction to alcohol in real life. Though Edgar Allan Poe showed many emotions, his depression held a constant grip on his mind. Losing so much caused Poe to end up bitter and twisted. Another of Poeââ¬â¢s strong emotions was anger, leading him to seek revenge. He got his revenge through stories. Poe created fictional characters who became victims of his imagination. By that I mean that he would take all of that anger and sorrow that he had built up in his soul and express it through writing, and more often than not, bad things happened to the characters he created. Although Edgar Allen Poes life was relatively short, what he experienced was more than most do in an entire lifetime. Edgar Allan Poes life and stories represented death, revenge, torture, grief, anguish, sadness, insanity, disease, and love. Edgar was an unusual man to say the least, but he wrote about the most deadly scary things that are in the back of our minds when we walk into a dark room or turn a corner in that erie basement many of us have, a nd in that way he stays with us. Edgar Allen Poes life experiences had a major impact on the topics and themes of his writing. One of the most common themes in Edgar Allen Poes poems and stories relating to death are ââ¬Å"The Black Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, Cast of Amontillado, Annabel Lee and The Raven. They are some examples that empahsis this. The Raven is a poem dedicated to his wife who died very young. Prophet! said I, thing of evil-prophet still, if bird or devil!- This in my opinion relates to how he did not know many things. Wether they were good or bad, he just knew what they were. Although Edgar Allen Poe only lived for 40 years, he will always be remembered and studied as one of the greatest American Writers of all time. The Hamlet Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The Hamlet - Research Paper Example Imaginative thinking is very important to literature. Of course, the film medium is a form of literature, so, imagination also comes in handy. When William Shakespeare wrote ââ¬Å"Hamletâ⬠, it is very certain that he put a whole lot of imaginative thought into it (Shakespeare & Constance). In both versions of Hamletââ¬â¢s adaptationââ¬âFranco Zeffirellis 1990 film starring Mel Gibson and Michael Almereydas 2000 version, the directors, as well as the actors, have been very creative as far as interpreting the play is concerned. Michael Almereydaââ¬â¢s version is the ââ¬Ëmarriageââ¬â¢ of the past and the contemporary. The question that this version probably raises in the mind of many viewers is whether this ââ¬Ëmarriageââ¬â¢ was worth it after all; whether this union has yielded any positive fruit. Like Shakespeare does in most of his plays, Michael Almereyda makes an attempt to make use of, not only a story that viewers are familiar, but he adopts a setting ââ¬â in terms of place and time ââ¬â that they are familiar with. He makes use of the present day New York. Unlike what obtains in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Hamlet, Michael Almereyda prefers to make Denmark a high profile media corporation, rather than interpreting it to be a country. If he (the director) had not intended to change anything in the play, he would certainly have left Denmark as a country that it is in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s version. Perhaps the only feature of this version by Almereyda that has not changed particularly is the language. The original Shakespearian language that was used by William Shakespeare himself is maintained. The choice of Shakespearian English for a screenplay set in the twenty first century seems to be an anomaly. As with some other features of the screenplay, the author seems to be pleading to the viewers that they suspend every sense of verisimilitude they possess. This is because it is totally illogical for anyone to choose
